Do Braces Hurt?
Orthodontic patients usually have a lot of questions. “Do braces hurt?” is one we get asked a lot.
Well, you’ll be happy to know that after braces are placed, most patients only experience mild teeth or gum soreness. The soreness typically lasts about one week and is rarely difficult to deal with.
During treatment, some patients find the soreness associated with braces to be uncomfortable, but manageable. When it does occur, it typically lasts for only a few days following adjustments.
If you do need pain relief, the following recommendations will help.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers
Over-the-counter medications, such as ibuprofen (Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help relieve pain and reduce inflammation. If you choose to use pain relievers, be sure to not exceed the recommended dosage.
Oral Anesthetics
Over-the-counter anesthetic gels like Orajel and Anbesol are commonly used to numb the gums and can help relieve the discomfort caused by braces. Just apply a small amount to teeth and gums for immediate results.
These pain relief recommendations can help relieve the minor pain that could occur with braces (after adjustments, etc.) as well as painful issues caused by accidents like getting hit in the mouth. In either case, the pain doesn’t need to be intolerable.
NOTE: A lot of orthodontic patients struggle with dental hygiene because taking good care of your teeth can be challenging with braces. The thing is that poor dental hygiene can lead to tooth decay and gum soreness. Taking the time to be diligent with dental hygiene means less discomfort during orthodontic treatment and overall better dental health for the long term.
