What to Do If You Have a Toothache While in Braces
It is a well-known fact that dental hygiene needs to be top priority, especially when wearing braces, because cavities can form much easier if the teeth aren’t cared for properly. You need to pay special attention to brushing and flossing during your orthodontic treatment, cleaning your teeth after every meal.
Pain Caused by Braces
Braces slowly move teeth into the ideal positions and you might experience some initial pain during the process which is to be expected. If you suddenly develop a toothache, that doesn’t feel normal you should have it checked out.
When to Contact Your Dentist
If the pain you are feeling feels different than what you’ve been experiencing since having your braces installed, contact your dentist. Some toothaches may be caused by the orthodontic care, such as a broken wire or adjustments, while others could be from a different medical (sinus infection) or dental issue (cavity). Only your orthodontist or dentist can tell. The examination will probably involve an X-Ray.
Dietary Changes
Eating hard, chewy, or spicy foods can make toothaches worse, especially if the pain is around the jaws as well as the tooth. You should also avoid sugary or very cold or hot drinks or food until you see your dentist or orthodontist.
Pain Relievers
The dentist might recommend that you take a pain reliever like ibuprofen or aspirin to help relieve the pain. If you can’t take these pain relievers, there are other temporary pain relief methods you can try like holding a cold, wet washcloth or ice pack to the outside area of your cheek or mouth where you’re experiencing the pain. The cold will help reduce any inflammation you’re experiencing. Swishing your mouth out with warm salt water can provide relief as can topical products like Orajel.
